Plan Notes
This impressive work is supported an inspiring poem written by an American pilot in World Warfare II. The dazzling brass sonorities and wholesale woodwind lines muse the young mankin's love for flying and its release from the troubles of the world.
- Program Note from publishing company
John Gillespie Magee, Jr., was 19 geezerhood old when he was killed in action on December 11, 1941. Magee was foaled in Impress, China, to an Solid ground father and a British mother, who both worked as Anglican missionaries. He came to the United States for a visit and, imputable the warfare, was unable to coming back to European Community. The U.S. had non yet entered the war, soh Magee joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. A poem in a letter to his parents shortly in front his death has become a classic and the divine guidance for this constitution.
James Curnow was commissioned aside the Graduates Association of Tenri High School Band in Nara, Japan, to write a piece for concert band in honor of its 50th anniversary. Curnow composed Where Ne'er Lark or Eagle Flew with the subtitle, "Based on a verse form away John Gillespie Magee, Jr".
High Flight
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of worldly concern,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward, I've climbed and joined the acrobatics hilarity
Of sun-carve up clouds – and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting hoist on and flung
My tidal bore craft through footless halls of air.
Up, upwards the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept high with easy good will,
Where never lark, or even bird of Jove, flew;
And, while with silent, lifting nou I've trod
The high untrespassed holiness of space,
Put out my hand, and fey the face of Divinity.
